Famine: We met our Goal!!!!

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

At the beginning of May our students set a HUGE GOAL of $9,169.99 for our 30 Hour Famine.  I wasn’t totally sure we’d reach it, but definitely believed it was possible.  Well….I’m proud to say that we made it!  We have currently raised $9,728.81, which is the 2nd highest total in our church’s history.  With the US government match the money we raised turns into $58,372.86.  That’s enough money to feed and care for 162 children for an entire year! Praise God!!!

Thank you for all of your prayers and support.  We couldn’t have done it without you!

Our famine is over, but if you would like to contribute to our famine, there’s still time.  Checks can be written out to River Oaks with “30 hour famine” in the memo line or you can donate towards our group online.

Famine $ to Zambia

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

This year our students were able to decide where the money they raised for the famine would go.  They had to choose between Haiti, Honduras, Philippines, Mali, Tanzania, and Zambia.  At the end of our vote Tanzania and Zambia tied.  In a foll0w-up vote on facebook Zambia won.

Check out the info below on Zambia:

Zambia has great potential in agriculture and natural resources, but disease and hunger have taken their toll. The AIDS crisis has cut the average life expectancy in Zambia to just 45 years.

Food production varies widely from year to year, because of recurring droughts, floods, and livestock diseases. As a result, hunger is never far away.

  • Nearly half of Zambia’s children don’t get the nutrition they need.
  • Around 1 in 7 people are HIV-positive.
  • Two-thirds of the population lives in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.25 a day.

World Vision is hard at work fighting poverty and hunger in Zambia, caring for 90,000 children in over two dozen communities. We’re working to protect vulnerable children from exploitation, stop the spread of HIV, and help children get the nutrition they need.

If you would like to contribute to our famine, checks can be written out to River Oaks with “30 hour famine” in the memo line or you can donate towards our group online.

Thank you in advance for supporting our students’ famine and impacting the lives of kids around the world by showing compassion to the poor!

Famine and the Poor

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

This morning before I spent some time reading and taking in God’s Word I prayed a prayer that I often do.  It was something like this “God, I want to commit this time in your Word to You.  Show me what you want me to see and hear…”

Well as I read several verses immediately stood out to me.  Before I share them with you I want you to know that our student ministries’ upcoming 30 Hour Famine has been on my mind.  Basically this is an event where students go 30 hours without food to get a taste of what real hunger feels like while also getting a crash course on global poverty and how God calls his followers to help the poor.  Students are also challenged to raise money to fight this poverty.

Well here are my verses:

Psalm 72:12-14 (NLT)

(God) will rescue the poor when they cry to him;
he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.
He feels pity for the weak and the needy,
and he will rescue them.
He will redeem them from oppression and violence,
for their lives are precious to him.

Proverbs 14:31 (NLT)

Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker,
but helping the poor honors him.

In case you were wondering, I didn’t do a search on verses that have to do with the poor.  The passages I read today came from a Bible software program I have.  It marked it out for me.  God obviously brought me to these verses and wanted to remind me much He cares for the poor.  Final question, how much do we care?

Famine Update – AMP Group Goal

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Last Sunday night I challenged all of our students to set a personal goal for our upcoming 30 Hour Famine.  Well they did and they set the bar high.  I would definitely classify it as a BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal!   If we reach it, it will be the 2nd most successful famine in our church’s history.

Are you ready to see the amount?

Get ready…

Here it is: $9,169.99!!!

Let’s reach for it!  Why not?  It’s all about saving kids lives!

If you would like to contribute to our famine, checks can be written out to River Oaks with “30 hour famine” in the memo line or you can donate towards our group online.

Get Ready for the 30 Hour Famine

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Our 30 Hour Famine is just over 3 weeks away!!!  This year we’re going to bring back the Cardboard Village.  This is exactly what it sounds like – students build cardboard houses and sleep in them overnight.  If it rains, it rains.  This is a fun activity that brings “home” the reality that many around the world don’t have the luxury of living in homes like we do.

If you would like to contribute to our famine, checks can be written out to River Oaks with “30 hour famine” in the memo line or you can donate towards our group online.

Thank you in advance for supporting our students’ famine and impacting the lives of kids around the world by showing compassion to the poor!

30 Hour Famine – you decide where the $$$ goes!

Friday, April 15th, 2011

This Sunday you will get a chance to decide where all of the money we raise for 30 Hour Famine will go.  How exciting is that?  Here are your choices:

Haiti – In January 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, killing up to 300,000 people. Millions were left homeless and hungry. More

Honduras – Beginning in the late 1990s, Honduras was hit with a series of crippling natural disasters - including a hurricane, floods, droughts, and more - that displaced millions. More

Philippines – Nearly 21 million people in this island nation live in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.25 a day. Around 1 in 3 kids there are malnourished. More

Mali – With nearly half its population under the age of 15, Mali is brimming with potential. Yet it’s one of the poorest countries on the planet. More

Tanzania – Combined with chronic food shortages, AIDS has had a devastating impact on Tanzania. Nearly a million children have lost one or both parents to the disease. More

Zambia – AIDS has cut the average life expectancy in Zambia to just 45 years. Food production varies significantly from year to year, so hunger is never far away. More

Kind of tough to choose huh?
